ALBANY -- New York's population of inmates who are older than age 50 has risen sharply over the past decade, state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli reported Tuesday.
The increase in the graying segment of the prison population came even though the overall number of felons held behind bars in New York has been dropping, an audit by DiNapoli's office found.
While his office found no available data for how much money is spent to care for inmates based on their age range, the audit did note that health care costs for prisoners rose by 20.4 percent in the last three years.
The full tab for inmate health care topped $380 million in 2016, an increase of some $64.5 million in three years.
