House leadership still working on alternative to gas tax plan
Despite a House committee advancing Gov. Bill Haslam's gas tax proposal on Wednesday, the chamber's leadership are working on an alternative transportation funding proposal that does not feature a hike in the tax on gasoline.
During a meeting of the House Finance, Ways and Means Subcommittee, Rep. David Hawk, R-Greeneville, said he was working with House Speaker Beth Harwell, R-Nashville, on a plan that is different from Haslam's, which seeks to raise the tax on gasoline by 6 cents over a three-year period.
Hawk did not provide much detail in committee but after the meeting adjourned, he told the USA TODAY NETWORK - Tennessee that he has been working with Harwell, House Republican Caucus Chairman Ryan Williams, R-Cookeville, and Speaker Pro Tempore Curtis Johnson, R-Clarksville.
A spokeswoman for Harwell confirmed the discussions have been taking place.
"The details have not been fully developed yet, but they are working diligently to offer something. She knows members have a desire to find a solution for our transportation and infrastructure funding, and is encouraged by that agreement," spokeswoman Kara Owen said.
