Norment reverses decision, allows reporters to return to Virginia Senate floor
RICHMOND -- Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment, facing pressure following his decision to move news reporters off the Senate floor, announced Friday that the media would be allowed to return Monday.
Norment, R-James City County, surprised the media and senators from both parties when the General Assembly convened Jan. 13 by ushering through new rules that banished reporters to the upper gallery.
He refused to comment on or explain the decision.
Norment’s move drew criticism from journalism associations, as reporter access in the upper gallery doesn’t allow the same ability to see and hear senators at work.
The initial move put statehouse reporters in the position of negotiating with Norment while also covering him.
