Former Tampa police employee pleads guilty to federal charges in tax refund fraud caseTAMPA — A former Tampa Police Department employee charged with using law enforcement databases to steal identities and commit tax refund fraud agreed to plead guilty to federal charges on Thursday. Tonia Bright pled guilty to two counts of obtaining information from a protected computer, according to the plea agreement filed by the U.S. Attorney's Office. Bright faces a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison for each charge. Bright's friend, Rita Girven, used information collected by Bright to file fraudulent income tax returns. Bright was the first police employee to be indicted in a fraud investigation made known after the April 2014 firing of veteran homicide Detective Eric Houston. Houston and his wife, LaJoyce Houston, a sergeant, were indicted in October for being intricately involved in the schemes.
