The Michigan Legislative Black Caucus has asked Gov. Rick Snyder to fire Darnell Earley, saying he has left behind a trail of destruction both in Detroit Public Schools and in the city of Flint. Snyder appointed Earley to be emergency manager of DPS in January 2015. The 46,000-student district has been in the spotlight recently for its deep budget problems, dilapidated buildings and mass teacher sick-outs that have closed dozens of schools. Prior to that, Earley was the emergency manager of Flint. Though he was not the emergency manager when the city decided to join a new water authority, he was in charge when it left the Detroit water system and decided to draw water temporarily from the Flint River, a decision that ultimately led to the water crisis there. "Darnell Earley presided over the biggest public health crisis in the history of Michigan,” Rep. Sheldon Neeley, D-Flint, first vice chairman of the caucus, said this afternoon in a news release. “And now he’s brought that same mismanagement and callous attitude to the Detroit Public Schools.” Read more: www.freep.com/story/news/education/2016/01/29/lawmakers-demand-earley-firing/79533674/
