House Speaker Philip Gunn named mostly Republicans to standing committee chairmanships on Friday, reducing the number of Democrats holding committee chairmanships from seven to two. Gunn named approximately 40 committees Friday, including four new ones, with Republicans in charge of all but two — not counting joint committees. "We are advancing a conservative agenda," Gunn said. "It wouldn't make sense to have people as committee chairs who don't follow our conservative philosophy." Gunn said Republicans worked very hard to bring conservative leadership to the state.
