Dozens of members of the ultra-violent MS-13 street gang were swept off the streets of the Boston area early yesterday morning after a state and federal dragnet led to indictments against 56 drug peddlers, murderers and thugs, authorities say. The alleged gang members — who carry gaudy nicknames like “Demento,” “Psycho,” “Animal” and “Little Crazy” — were indicted on federal racketeering conspiracy charges, including allegations of murder, attempted murder, drug trafficking, immigration offenses and firearm violations, according to authorities. “Law enforcement will maintain a persistent presence, using all available resources to bear, so long as organizations like MS-13, and other gangs, violent gangs, continue to establish themselves, recruit and perpetuate violence,” U.S. Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz said. “Rest assured, we will be watching, especially for any retaliation that takes place as a result of this arrest.” All told, more than 400 state and federal officials rounded up 37 gang members in Chelsea, East Boston, Everett, Lynn, Revere and Somerville, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office. Fifteen accused gangsters were already in custody on federal, state or immigration charges. Others were taken down in jurisdictions along the Eastern seaboard.
