As expected, Gov. Andrew Cuomo officially called on Saturday special elections for April 19 for the vacant seats of former legislative leaders Dean Skelos and Sheldon Silver. In all, four seats (three in the Assembly and one in the state Senate) will be filled in the special election, which will be held on the same day as the presidential primaries. Silver, the longtime Democratic Assembly speaker, and Skelos, the Republican Senate majority leader who succeeded Joe Bruno, were convicted in separate corruption cases last year. With their convictions, the men automatically lost their seats. Don Lee, a Democrat, announced last week his bid for the 65th Assembly District seat that Silver represented for nearly four decades. That district covers lower Manhattan, including the Lower East Side, Silver’s base of power.
