ALBANY - Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office is criticizing the top salaries at SUNY and CUNY, saying the administration costs in the system are outpacing other states. SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher has been facing criticism about her salary and perks, and state records showed that the top 50 highest-paid employees all worked for the state university system or the New York City colleges. In fact, all but one of the top 100 workers worked in the public-college system. "These facts raise questions about administrative costs, inefficiencies and duplication in both systems," Cuomo's director of state operations, Jim Malatras, wrote to Zimpher and CUNY chancellor James Milliken. He called many of the salaries "exorbitant." The letter comes as SUNY is seeking another five years of tuition increases of up to $300 a year, and lawmakers have expressed concerns over extending the same rates within the SUNY 2020 plan.
