The family is still waiting. Fifteen years after Devaughn Darling's death at Florida State University, his family waits for the state to pay a $1.8 million settlement. Darling, a highly-recruited linebacker from Houston, Texas, died during an off-season workout in February 2001 The university said it did nothing wrong. The family disagreed. Autopsy reports were inconclusive but found a rare sickle cell trait that may have contributed to cardiac arrest. The family and FSU reached a $2 million out-of-court settlement, but state law caps the university liability at $200,000. The rest has to be approved by the state legislature in a $1.8 million claims bill. Under terms of the settlement, FSU supports the Darling claims bill.
