TALLAHASSEE — The Senate is poised to pass a bill that would increase the state’s regulation of unscrupulous guardians who have taken financial advantage of vulnerable elderly Floridians. Sen. Nancy Detert, R-Venice, called her measure “the biggest bill I’m carrying this year” and it follows up on a law she helped pass last year to curb abuses in the adult guardianship system, where guardians and attorneys have taken advantage of elders put under their supervision. This year, Detert’s bill is aimed at extending state oversight to private guardians. The state already regulates public guardians, who are appointed to take care of wards who have no money. “There is no regulation for private guardians who suddenly are preying upon the elderly and as a guardian they can take over your medical decisions, your financial decisions,” Detert told the Senate Tuesday.
