St. Louis County corrections officers seek pay increase and respectCLAYTON • St. Louis County corrections officers are seeking respect and, with that, a complementary pay raise for a job they say requires them to function as peace officers, psychologists, social workers, educators and counselors. The officers’ cause received a boost Tuesday evening when the County Council agreed to schedule a Committee of the Whole meeting to formally listen to their pitch for a salary increase. Lt. William Bradford, a county jail veteran of 30-plus years, went one step further by inviting council members to visit the justice center to observe firsthand the working conditions officers encounter on a daily basis. “Come over and see what we do,” Bradford told the council, pausing to set up the punch line.
