PINCKNEYVILLE, Ill. • The former bookkeeper of the Pinckneyville Rural Fire Protection District admitted Tuesday in federal court in Benton, Ill., that she stole more than $450,000 in public funds from 2004 to 2013. Tammy L. Kellerman, 53, who lives in Pinckneyville, waived indictment and pleaded guilty of four counts of mail fraud. Officials said she used checks on the district account to make payments on her credit cards and other personal expenses, and falsified records to hide it. According to court documents, a second signature was required on each check, but she was provided with signed blank checks on the promise to pay only authorized bills. Kellerman remains at liberty on bail until sentencing May 24. The maximum penalty is 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each count, although sentencing guidelines are likely to call for much less. She also will be required to make restitution. Pinckneyville is a community of about 5,500 people, about 65 miles southeast of St. Louis. www.stltoday.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/pinckneyville-ill-fire-district-bookkeeper-stole/article_b3e7d0b9-2ca1-53e8-ae68-9521906853f2.html
