CHEYENNE – The University of Wyoming’s athletics department is firing back against criticisms of a controversial proposal to use $8 million in state taxpayer funds on the university’s NCAA programs. UW football coach Craig Bohl, men’s basketball coach Larry Shyatt and women’s basketball coach Joe Legerski penned an open letter Tuesday “to the people of Wyoming” that argues there are misconceptions surrounding the proposal. “We feel that the people of Wyoming deserve to have the facts about this proposal, which would maintain a highly successful matching program that has been instrumental in helping UW’s teams remain competitive in a rapidly changing intercollegiate athletics landscape,” the letter states. The $8 million in “athletic competitiveness” funds for the two-year period would be matched by UW through private donations. It would help pay for food and nutrition, equipment, scholarships, recruiting and more for the university’s collegiate teams.
