CONCORD — In an attempt to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, several lawmakers want to increase the penalties for stealing a firearm in a burglary. According to the prime sponsor of the bill, Rep. Kathleen Rogers, D-Concord, who is also a former Merrimack County attorney, the change would allow a prosecutor to bring two class A felony charges against someone who steals a gun when committing a burglary. That would allow a prosecutor to bring charges that could result in a 40-year sentence to prison instead of 20 years as the laws currently stand today, she said. “Armed and dangerous people cannot break into someone’s home and steal a gun and receive a light sentence,” Rogers said.
