SANTA FE, N.M. — New Mexico’s state auditor is launching a probe of financial transactions at the Cebolleta Land Grant because the local subdivision of the state has not submitted required audits.
State Auditor Tim Keller said Thursday that bringing the land grant into auditing compliance will enable the community to pursue state and federal funding.
The Cebolleta Land Grant in eastern New Mexico was established as a state subdivision in 2004 and collects revenues from mineral rights agreements for uranium mining. The auditor’s office estimates Cebolleta collected $8.5 million in uranium-related revenues since 2007.
The Office of the State Auditor is expanding its oversight of land grants this year. Cebolleta has been placed on a list of unaudited entities that are at greater risk of financial misstatements or possible fraud, waste and abuses.
