ALBANY - When you're filing your taxes this year, there's an extra $350 awaiting you if you have a child under age 17 and are income eligible. New York is in the second year of a three-year program that provides a $350 rebate to New Yorkers with children, called the "Family Tax Relief Credit." In 2014, the rebates were sent out as checks in the mail. This year and in 2017, the money is a credit when people file their income taxes. Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state Legislature approved the program in 2013, saying it's one of the ways they are trying to lower taxes. Critics have knocked the programs, saying it's just a giveaway and doesn't get at the root causes of New York's high taxes.
