Rauner alters bill that would reopen Illinois State Museum, includes admission fee directiveGov. Bruce Rauner Friday made changes to a bill intended to reopen the Illinois State Museum and related facilities, including a directive to begin charging entrance fees. Rauner issued an amendatory veto to Senate Bill 317 that said the state should operate the museum in Springfield as well as sites at Dickson Mounds, Lockport, Rend Lake and the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago. Shortly after the amendatory veto message was issued Friday, the Department of Natural Resources sent out a notice that it would be making an announcement about the museum at a news conference Monday. The bill was intended to reopen the sites that have been closed to the public since the end of September. With the state having no budget, Rauner said $4.8 million could be saved by shuttering the facilities. Although the State Museum in Springfield is closed to the public, union employees continue to work there. A lawsuit filed in St. Clair County put on hold the administration’s efforts to lay off the workers.
