Bernie Sanders' free college plan would cost $70 billion, U.S. News reports
A higher education analyst has done the math and calculated that Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders' plan to make all public colleges and universities tuition-free would cost government $70 billion, according to U.S. News and World Report. Kevin James, a research fellow with the Center on Higher Education Reform at the American Enterprise Institute, notes in his column that Sanders' "College for All Act" would cost more than twice what the federal government spends on Pell grants. "And much of that money would provide a free education to students whose families can already afford it," James said. He also questions the effect that making higher education free would have on its quality, innovation and efficiency.
