Historic marker at NH State Library lauds state's Presidential PrimaryWhere it is: The historic marker is located at the entrance to the New Hampshire State Library, 20 Park St., Concord. Date erected: Historic marker 175 was placed in 2000. What the sign says: Since 1920, New Hampshire has held its presidential primary election before any other state. Changes in New Hampshire law in 1949 made the primary a direct selection of presidential aspirants, not a mere choice of delegates pledged to specific nominees. Held in February or March, during the week preceding any similar election elsewhere, the New Hampshire primary has become a critical first step on the road to the White House. Taking their responsibility seriously, New Hampshire voters test contenders during the months leading to the primary and have usually favored the candidate who ultimately attains the Oval Office. The back story: The New Hampshire primary is the first in a series of nationwide primaries that are part of the process to choose delegates for the national conventions. Although only a few delegates are chosen by this primary, its importance comes from its massive media coverage in which even minor candidates are given a national stage. The publicity and momentum of a win can be enormous for a frontrunner, or a major boost for a lesser candidate who gets a better-than-expected result.
