OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — The city of Oxnard has agreed to pay $2.9 million to the family of a man who died in police custody after he ingested a large amount of methamphetamine.
The Ventura County Star reports (http://bit.ly/1UZVPiC ) that a jury awarded the money to Robert Ramirez's family in July. Under the settlement reached Monday, the city has agreed to drop its appeals of the jury's verdict.
Ramirez's relatives had sued the Oxnard Police Department after the 26-year-old died in June 2012.
An autopsy report determined Ramirez died of "active prone restraint" after officers held him down so he could get medical help.
