A student loan forgiveness program aimed at employing more minorities and women with doctoral degrees at the state’s public colleges flew through the Senate on Tuesday morning. The state’s Higher Education Department does have a program intended to recruit minorities and women with such degrees into higher education teaching positions, but only six people are currently enrolled in the program. The new plan would allow more people to take advantage of the program, a priority of the state’s Higher Education Department, said Joseph Cueto, a spokesman for the department. “The Higher Education Department has analyzed loan-for-service programs to see which ones can be converted to more high-demand loan repayment programs – while at the same time addressing specific workforce needs,” Cueto said. “This program fits the criteria.” The plan passed with little debate on the Senate floor 37-2.
