Chief justice focuses on budget cuts during speech to legislatorsJUNEAU, Alaska—Like just about everything else this session, this year's State of the Judiciary Address was focused on the budget. Chief Justice Craig Stowers spent nearly every minute of his first address as the head of the Alaska Supreme Court talking about the how cuts have impacted the courts and appealing to legislators to make smart, reasonable reductions to respond to the fiscal crisis. His roughly 30-minute address was full of details about how the court system, with its relatively small budget of $112 million, has managed the $3.4 million cut by the Legislature last year. He said there have been furloughs, maintenance has been put off, paper mailing has shifted online where it can and positions haven't been filled. He thanked those who have been affected by the cuts and who have taken voluntary unpaid leave to help with the budget.
