Federal prosecutors have notified the families of some of James “Whitey” Bulger’s murder victims that they must sign settlement papers by the end of this month if they want a share of $822,000 in cash and other assets that were seized from the gangster after his capture. The move was applauded by some victims’ relatives who questioned why it has taken so long for the government to fulfill its promise to split Bulger’s assets among the families of 20 people he and his associates were accused of killing and four people he extorted. “I think it’s about time,” said Patricia Donahue, whose husband, Michael, was fatally shot by Bulger in 1982. “I don’t think that it’s right that the government waited this long. This could have been done a long time ago.” A spokeswoman for the US attorney’s office in Boston confirmed that prosecutors had sent certified letters containing the settlement agreement to Bulger’s victims and their families, but declined to comment further.
