Legislators: Coal ash landfill company would drop plans if Pickens County buys siteThe company that wants to build a coal ash landfill in Pickens County has told the county’s legislative delegation it is willing to forego the project if the county will buy the property, state Rep. Davey Hiott told The Greenville News. County Councilman Neil Smith, who represents the Liberty area, where MRR Pickens, LLC has made plans to build the landfill, told a crowd of about 100 at the Liberty Civic Auditorium Thursday night that he supports the idea of buying it, if the price is reasonable. He said he hasn't heard a price. Meanwhile, a bill sponsored by Hiott that would require coal ash to be disposed of only in Class 3 landfills passed in the House on Thursday, and a companion bill in the Senate is expected to go to the judiciary committee Tuesday, said Sen. Larry Martin of Pickens, who chairs that committee and sponsored the senate bill. The proposed site has been approved as a Class 2 landfill, which normally is used for construction debris and other waste that’s not hazardous.
