As expected, Democratic Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin on Thursday vetoed bills that would make West Virginia a right-to-work state (SB 1), and repeal the state’s Prevailing Wage Act (HB 4005), saying neither bill will create jobs or grow the state economy. Republican legislative leaders are expected to act quickly to override the vetoes. They only need simple majorities — 18 of 34 votes in the Senate and 51 of 100 votes in the House of Delegates — to make the bills state law over the governor’s objections. “Foremost, I dispute that West Virginia needs a right-to-work law,” Tomblin said in the veto message for the bill that would allow employees in union shops to opt out of paying union dues. “The issue of right to work has been discussed for a number of years, but I have never had a company cite right-to-work as a barrier to relocating to West Virginia. “Since becoming governor in 2010, West Virginia has welcomed more than $10 billion in new investments and expansion projects,” Tomblin’s veto message continued. “I do not believe West Virginia needs a right-to-work law, a law that would lead to little if any economy growth and may lower the wages of West Virginia workers.” See more at: www.wvgazettemail.com/news/20160211/tomblin-vetoes-prevailing-wage-bill
