Alabama would be allowed to drug test food stamp recipients under proposal by Rep. Robert AderholtFood stamp recipients could be subject to drug testing under a plan unveiled Thursday by Alabama Congressman Robert Aderholt. Rep. Aderholt, R-Haleyville, said his proposal would allow states to opt into mandatory drug testing as a requirement for receiving food stamps. "This is a compassionate way to try and help these people who have issues, instead of turning the head," said Aderholt, who chairs the Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee. The food stamps program, officially known as SNAP or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, provides funding assistance for low-income families. The program serves about 46 million Americans, including 879,861 in Alabama, a state that has seen a small decline in food stamp participation in recent years. The average monthly SNAP payment in the U.S. is $125.35 per participant; Alabama's average is slightly lower at $121.77.
