$1 billion difference between Florida House, Senate budget plans
TALLAHASSEE | Now that the Florida House and Senate each have signed off on their own versions of the state budget, lawmakers begin the negotiation process known as conference to finalize the document. That process will determine whether Gov. Rick Scott gets the full $1 billion tax cut he has requested and how much of the increase in K-12 funding will come on the backs of taxpayers. Senate budget chief Tom Lee, R-Brandon, said his chamber would consider a “buy out” of the required local property tax for schools by using more of the state’s general revenue fund instead. That would reduce the bill for homeowners, but how much has not been determined. Lee said most senators’ concerns are making sure the tax-cut package provides true economic stimulus even if it falls short of Scott’s request.
