Senate president wrests control of health committee from firebrand RepublicanThe Senate president stripped Sen. Mary Pilcher-Cook of control of the chamber’s health committee this week, a rare exercise of raw political power during an ongoing session. Pilcher-Cook, a Shawnee Republican, revealed the move by Senate President Susan Wagle in a blistering statement Friday night. She said the demotion came in response to her attempt to offer a Medicaid expansion proposal on the Senate floor Tuesday for the purpose of voting it down. Pilcher-Cook lashed out at Wagle, R-Wichita, and branded her as an establishment Republican, linking her to past Senate President Steve Morris, a moderate, and ex-U.S. House Speaker John Boehner. In response, Wagle charged that Pilcher-Cook had shown “complete disrespect” for the Senate and its rules. Wagle’s action to remove Pilcher-Cook from the Public Health and Welfare Committee and Pilcher-Cook’s verbal attack bring into sharp relief long-running tensions within the Senate GOP caucus. Pilcher-Cook insinuated Wagle could soon lose her grip on the Senate presidency.
