Mayor vetoes proposed referendum on dealing with contracts Mayor Chris Beutler has vetoed putting a proposed city charter change related to professional service contracts on the ballot, contending the current process is working. Beutler said in a veto message Monday that giving the City Council greater authority over professional service contract rules would dilute the authority of the mayor. Unless five of the seven council members agree to override the mayor’s veto, the issue will not be on the May 10 primary ballot. The proposed charter change would allow the City Council to set policy for how Lincoln should handle professional service contracts. Currently the mayor creates the rules for handling those deals, which are generally with engineering or architectural firms.
