SANTA FE, N.M. — A bill aimed at giving more protection to rape victims is headed to Gov. Susana Martinez’s desk after clearing the House tonight on a 66-0 vote. Specifically, the bill, Senate Bill 84, would allow judges to grant permanent no-contact orders against convicted rapists. It’s been pushed by Racheal Gonzales, a rape survivor, who also led the charge for similar legislation during last year’s 60-day legislative session. While last year’s legislation died on the session’s final day, this year’s measure passed both the House and Senate without a single “no” vote.
