Mississippi Department of Insurance officials said that roughly $1.8 million is owed to courts in cities and counties across the state due to forfeiture of bail bonds dating back seven years during a hearing Monday on one of the bills the department is proposing to better regulate bail bond agents. "We have some of the weakest laws in the country," Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney said during the Insurance Committee meeting on House Bill 190. The committee didn't take up House Bill 191, which would increase fees, at the meeting. Several bail bond agents attended the meeting. Yhey were represented by Al Sage, a lobbyist for the bail bond industry, who spoke on their behalf. Chaney said the goal is to better regulate bail bond agents and raise professional standards. A state-federal investigation into the activities of some bail agents is examining human trafficking, counterfeiting, drugs and $1 million in fake bonds. Sage said the bills don't do anything to resolve any issue about human trafficking or any other crime. Read more: www.clarionledger.com/story/news/2016/02/15/lawmakers-hear-bail-bond-agents/80406670/
