Bill to restrict disposal of coal ash headed to Senate floorCOLUMBIA -- A bill that would restrict the disposal of coal ash in South Carolina from utilities to Class 3 landfills is headed to the Senate floor. The amended House bill received an 18-0 vote by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday. If lawmakers don't act, it could have environmental impacts across the state, where currently 67 Class 2 landfills exist that could take coal ash if a liner is placed underneath, said Senate Judiciary Chairman Larry Martin of Pickens. Martin said the danger is from out-of-state utilities who might ship their coal ash to South Carolina landfills.
