Social-agency leaders, with nod of two police officials, urge Illinois to adopt a budget that restores servicesALTON • Two police officials joined directors of Metro East social-service agencies Tuesday in urging Illinois leaders to approve a state budget sufficient to meet their clients’ needs. Speakers aimed most of their comments at Gov. Bruce Rauner and repeatedly called for increased revenue as the solution. Illinois has been without a budget since July 1 because Rauner, a Republican, and leaders of the Democratic majorities in the Illinois House and Senate have been in a standoff over higher taxes and the governor’s demand for business-friendly reforms. Without a budget, state funding for social agencies has been reduced or eliminated. “We need a budget, and we need it now,” said a tearful Amy Foster, 41, a client and volunteer advocate at the Impact Center for Independent Living, where the gathering held its news conference. The Responsible Budget Coalition, a statewide alliance of social-service, labor and religious groups, sponsored the event in Alton and similar gatherings Tuesday in Springfield and Chicago.
