The Alabama House of Representatives today passed a bill to make it illegal to sell fetal tissue, a practice that is already banned by federal law.
Rep. April Weaver, R-Alabaster, the bill's sponsor, said that it was important to have a state law on the books in case federal authorities failed to prosecute or investigate a case.
Weaver said the undercover Planned Parenthood videos were the original catalyst of the legislation, but she said her bill is not about the videos.
"We just want to be sure that here in Alabama, people are not able to profit from the harvesting of deceased, unborn infants," Weaver said.
