U.S. Senator Bill Nelson thinks the Florida Legislature is out of touch with Floridians. Nelson was at the statehouse Wednesday to congratulate the League of Women Voters on their Fair Districts court victory, which forced lawmakers to redraw Congressional and state senate districts lines consistent with the anti-gerrymandering amendment. Nelson cited the Republican-controlled legislature’s opposition to Medicaid expansion and Florida House proposals to allow fracking and the open carrying of firearms as examples of the divide between a majority of Floridians and lawmakers. Both the open carry and campus carry legislation are stalled in the Senate. A March 2015 Public Policy Poll found 58 percent of Floridians support enrolling the uninsured in Medicaid. A March 2013 Quinnipiac Poll found Floridians favor stricter gun control measures by a 51 – 44 percent margin. And 77 Florida cities and counties, representing 64-percent of the state population, have passed either a resolution opposed to or an ordinance banning fracking. Nelson said the LWV victory at the polls and in the courts will eventually produce a legislature more reflective of the general population.
