RICHMOND -- Virginia GOP lawmakers are pushing for bigger raises for state employees and more spending on public schools while Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe wants to lower corporate tax rates and increase spending on economic development initiatives. Both chambers of the Republican-controlled General Assembly unveiled their draft $100 billion two-year, state budget proposals Sunday. It’s the latest step in the budget process before lawmakers and McAuliffe hash out a final deal. The governor said he’s pleased that lawmakers’ proposed spending plans include a boost for Virginia schools and state workers and expressed confidence that all parties will reach an agreement on the details. “My staff and I will review these proposals in detail over the coming days, but I am optimistic that we will reach a bipartisan consensus that will expand on the great success we are having growing and diversifying Virginia’s economy,” McAuliffe said in a statement.
