A state commission tasked with answering the question of what, if any, raise state lawmakers should receive appears to need the Legislature itself to answer a key question: Do you want to be full-time, or part-time? The Commission on Legislative, Judicial and Executive Compensation is more than six months away from its deadline to recommend a pay increase for the legislative and executive branches after recommending raises for the judiciary last year But as it gathers information — such as how much state lawmakers in other states make — the commission may need to wait for the Legislature to debate its current part-time status. "This is fluid," said Fran Reiter, an appointee of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, at a Monday commission meeting. "If we had all this comparison information, all this research in front of us right now, we still wouldn't know what it was we're defining. We may know at some future date in this process. We may not know." Reiter said she could foresee a situation in which commission members hold public hearings, pore over data from elsewhere, but then hit the pause button.
