CHEYENNE – A Wyoming legislative panel rejected a bill Monday that would have increased the threshold for a property-offense crime to be considered a felony. The Senate Judiciary Committee killed House Bill 38 after none of the five members on the panel made a motion to move the proposal. The legislation would have required the value of the property that is stolen or destroyed to be $2,500 or higher – an increase from the current amount of $1,000 or higher – for it to be considered a felony instead of a misdemeanor. The difference between a felony and misdemeanor is significant, since the lower-level misdemeanors carry a punishment of up to six months in jail and a fine up to $750. A felony for a property offense crime can carry up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
