PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Hundreds of people shouted down speakers at a State House news conference Monday who urged Syrian refugees be kept out of Rhode Island. The crowd included Brown University students who marched from campus chanting "Say it loud, say it clear! Refugees are welcome here!" Clergy and community activists joined them. They jeered Charles Jacobs, president of the Boston-based "Americans for Peace and Tolerance," as he read: "We are a country of immigrants that welcomes people who come to join us and bolster our way of life. We sympathize with people fleeing war. But an influx of Syrian refugees may pose significant dangers to Rhode Islanders, especially to the Jewish community here." Jacobs also cited "studies of Syrian textbooks" that purportedly "show that children are indoctrinated to think it is their duty to wage jihad and become martyrs ..." Pete Hoekstra, the former Michigan representative and one-time chairman of the U.S. House Intelligence Committee, and State Rep. Michael W. Chippendale, R-Foster, joined Jacobs in demanding Governor Raimondo rescind her "unconditional welcome to Syrian refugees."
