NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — After six months of campaigning in New Hampshire, John Kasich has gained momentum. But a top showing there on Feb. 9 would only kick off another challenge: prevailing in more conservative South Carolina 11 days later. “One of my friends said, 'Napoleon fought across and conquered Europe in about a week,'" Kasich joked to a crowd of 100-plus Wednesday night at a bar in Charleston. "So we’ve got a couple extra days. We’re going to have to march down here. And we’ve gotta deliver this state." The best-funded presidential campaigns are walking neighborhoods, putting together coalitions, seeking high-profile endorsements, and lining up voters for a pivotal Feb. 20 primary among Republicans who survive contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.
