WV mayors oppose resolution that would ban LGBT nondiscrimination lawsCity leaders across West Virginia voiced their opposition to a resolution that would amend the state Constitution to prohibit cities and towns from passing nondiscrimination ordinances extending protections to the LGBT community. Introduced last week by Majority Whip Craig Blair, Senate Joint Resolution 13 would prohibit counties and municipalities from passing an ordinance that creates a protected classification not included in state law. Because West Virginia’s Human Rights Act doesn’t include protections based on sexual orientation or gender identity, eight cities have adopted their own ordinances to extend protections from discrimination to the LGBT community. Many of those city leaders contend that the West Virginia Legislature has no business controlling the affairs of local elected bodies.
