Cleveland teachers protest the school district pulling out of contract negotiationsCLEVELAND, Ohio - About 400 Cleveland Teachers Union members and supporters packed the school board meeting at John Marshall High School tonight to protest the recent breakdown in contract negotiations with the Cleveland school district. The union and the district have been negotiating a contract extension since November, but the district pulled out of negotiations last week to send the dispute to a fact-finder. A hearing will likely take place in April, with the contract expiring at the end of June. District CEO Eric Gordon said other unions in the district have accepted a one-year extension with a two-percent cost-of-living pay increase. He said the district cannot offer a longer deal or more money until the 2012 tax increase passed by voters is renewed this fall. But union members reject that claim and say the district has signed contracts in far more dire financial circumstances than it has today.
