Missouri voters could decide on greater religious exemptions to same-sex marriage ceremoniesJEFFERSON CITY • Missouri voters could decide to give legal protections to businesses, churches and other religious entities if they decline to participate in same-sex weddings. Sen. Bob Onder, R-Lake St. Louis, wants to put the question on the ballot this year in the form of a proposed constitutional amendment. Under the proposal, the state or any local government wouldn't be able to penalize a religious group for declining to conduct or facilitate a same-sex marriage ceremony. Business owners such as bakers or florists would also be shielded from government penalties if they chose not to sell to gay couples for their weddings. The penalties disallowed would include fines or loss of any tax-exempt status.
