Birmingham businesses need 'reasonable' time to comply with minimum wage, Alabama AG saysAfter the Birmingham City Council's approval of an expedited minimum wage increase Tuesday, businesses must be allowed a reasonable amount of time to comply, according to a statement from Alabama's attorney general. Local businesses and officials have contacted Attorney General Luther Strange and expressed concerns about the impact of the ordinance, which increases the citywide wage floor to $10.10. Businesses that do not comply could face fines and other penalties. "Because this ordinance does not provide a reasonable time for employers to prepare to comply with the new minimum wage, it could greatly disrupt the Birmingham economy," Strange said. Birmingham's increase was initially set to happen incrementally, to $8.50 an hour in July 2016 and then to $10.10 a year later. This month, the council passed an ordinance to move the increase up to March 1 before Tuesday's vote on an even earlier date, Feb. 24.
