The Alabama Legislature passed a bill today raising the penalty for aggravated child abuse in cases in which the victim is younger than 6. The legislation has been commonly called "Winston's law" because it was prompted by a case involving a 4-year-old boy from Elmore County. The bill raises the penalty from a Class B felony, punishable by 2 to 20 years in prison, to a Class A, punishable by 10 to 99 years, or life, in prison. District Attorney Randall Houston, whose circuit includes Elmore County, asked the Legislature to increase the penalty after 4-year-old Winston Crampton of Wetumpka was found unresponsive and suffering from multiple injuries in his mother's boyfriend's vehicle in Panama City, Fla., in September.
