At the R.I. General Assembly: A push for driver's licenses for undocumented immigrants
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Immigrant-rights supporters Wednesday launched their latest campaign to add Rhode Island to the list of states that allow undocumented immigrants to legally drive a car.
At a rally in the State House rotunda, a group of lawmakers cheered on by dozens of immigrants unveiled bills to create a "driving privilege license" for those who can't produce a Social Security number or prove their legal status, who might benefit from such a license.
"What do we want?"
"Licenses."
"When?"
"Now," supporters of the bill, led by Juan Garcia, of the Committee of Immigrants in Action, chanted.
