After failing on Senate floor, Tommy Norment inserts Airbnb opposition into state budgetRICHMOND -- If at first you don’t succeed on the Senate floor, try, try again – by inserting your wishes into the state budget, if you’re co-chairman of the Finance Committee. That’s what Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment did regarding his opposition to Airbnb, the online marketplace where people rent their homes like hotel rooms. Norment’s move drew criticism from a member of his caucus because it could create a second debate on a bill that already passed. Airbnb was founded in 2008 and is similar to the concept of Lyft and Uber for cars. With Airbnb, hosts make money, and guests have a place to stay, usually for less than a hotel. Hosts and guests can get to know each other by sharing profiles. The service isn’t regulated or taxed in Virginia. The hotel industry doesn’t like Airbnb. Some localities, including tourism-reliant Williamsburg, opposed the bills. Norment is in their corner.
