Two men and a 2-year-old boy were killed when a tornado tore through Waverly and destroyed their mobile home in an afternoon and evening of violent weather that also claimed the life of an Appomattox County man and inflicted injuries and damage in the Tappahannock area. State police said they began responding about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday after an apparent tornado struck the Tappahannock-Essex County area in eastern Virginia. “I have several friends who have lost their homes and some are still trapped in them,” Tappahannock resident McKenzie Cusick said on Facebook. “I just passed a house that had half of it missing and the vehicle was flipped upside down. Emergency crews are trying their hardest to get to people.” Authorities at a news conference Thursday morning in Tappahannock reported that at least 25 people in the area were at the hospital being treated for injuries. Ten of those people had been transported by emergency personnel. The other 15 had transported themselves or were driven by someone. There were no fatalities.
