Representatives of the Chicago-based Fantasy Sports Trade Association are backing legislation from Rep. Mike Zalewski, D-Riverside, to clearly define and regulate fantasy sports services in Illinois. The legislation was prompted by an opinion from Attorney General Lisa Madigan, who says that under Illinois law, daily fantasy sports is considered illegal gambling. State attorneys general in New York, Nevada, Texas, Hawaii, Mississippi and Vermont have made the same ruling. At a Statehouse news conference Thursday, Zalewski said House Bill 2343 would effectively bring safe, reliable and regulated fantasy sports play to Illinois for the first time. “This is about a diverse industry with Illinois employers large and small providing an innovative form of entertainment,” Zalewski said. “My colleagues and I have a unique opportunity to set a national standard on how to regulate these sites.” Read more: www.sj-r.com/news/20160225/illinois-house-bill-seeks-to-legalize-fantasy-sports
